Temple Run!

For the past three weeks, the final batch of DDE was going through the module titled ‘Cultural Heritage and Understanding’. Aimed at documenting the rich and vibrant Indian heritage found in architectural sites in and around Bangalore through Photography, the module was led by Mr. Rishi Singhal, program coordinator, Photography Design, NID PG Campus, Gandhinagar as external faculty.

It was exciting times for the students as it was their first time with SLR cameras. The first week was packed with three trips to Tipu’s Summer Palace, Someshwara Temple and Kurudumale Temple, apart from the classroom sessions. Rishi enticed everyone with his work, knowledge of the subject and his incredibly contagious charm and wit.

The trips were meant to be testing grounds for the skills imparted in the classroom. It was quite a spectacle for the locals as eighteen odd people alighted from a bus, SLRs around their necks and dispersed themselves all over the place. Soon everyone would be wrangling with shutter speed, ISO, f-stops, focus and camera angles to capture the best shot even as they walked barefoot on thorny shrubbery (Ouch!). The result was a collection of some amazing photographs considering the rather short training period. Rishi agreed.

The following two weeks revolved around filtering data and boiling down to the particular aspect of heritage that students wished to put across through photographic data. Some chose to stick to the architectural heritage while others went ahead with areas of their interest like cuisine and intangible heritage.

The final output was an interesting mix of media. Ranging from panoramas and stop motion animations to interactive and experiential applications. Everybody had the freedom to tell their story in the form they thought best. The module brought forth various ways how digital media can be used to create interesting and engaging experiences while educating and informing users about the often overlooked aspects of the Indian heritage that reside in these architectural marvels.

Folk Art Hack by atma studios!

As beautifully diverse our country is, so is our traditions & one of the well-known traditions of India is the Indian arts and crafts.

Intricate details, emphasized features with the essence of long forgotten old stories. Every Indian artwork brings forward the authenticity of our diversity travelling through the veins of the each element present in the artwork.

There is a uniqueness in every element of artwork coming from various parts of India. One can easily differentiate between a Bengal Patua and a Madhubani just by observing the line quality of the painting.

Since years this magic of composition has been passed on through generation within its society which preserves the heritage and the objective of the society.

But now, anyone can stream in the Identity of our Culture along with their own personal identity.

This week, Gyann Adda invited Atma Studios for its 64th episode for a talk about the ‘traditional yet contemporary’ paintings of India.

This is what Atma Studios has recently ventured into and are presently experimenting with. For them, anyone can create a masterpiece, an official art qualification cannot qualify you in becoming an artist, but your passion and will can.

Similar to the heterogeneous mix of talent within the NID community, thier studio comprises of people from various backgrounds where even the younger generation takes an active part. They shared the same Idea with us.

S.C.D Balaji, representing Atma Studios, ignited our minds by transcending us to the world of Indian Art. We took a tour around the various elements of Indian art paintings from various regions of India. Picking out pin points from the Glory of the vast empire of the Indian Art and objectifying them into today’s contemporary realm.

Finally, he dedicated his time to conduct a 2 hour workshop where we were familiarized with the joy of creating a ‘traditional yet contemporary’ Indian artwork ourselves, Thanks to them, our perception of looking at artifacts and contemporary art pieces will never be the same again.

“It’s more fun to blame things than to fix them” said Dr P.G Bhat, a retired naval officer and a software professional, and now an educationist and a social worker.

This week, students of IID, swam deep into the questions upon the functionality and the working of the Election Commission of India. Simple data sets could stir the  national system and in the end all were stirred up with energy and left bowled over with his enthusiasm and passion to tick out little errors with his witty numbers. He sees the world around him as a big code with some simple bugs.

We live in a world where our identity is enveloped in an 8.6 cm X 5.4 cm PVC laminated sheet of paper, i.e., the voter ID card. So any discrepancy there, resonates exponentially on the Indian picture.

He talked about the importance of standardization and simplification electoral data set In India.

India, a country of 1.2 billion people, where identities are quantified. We might live by our names (conventionally) followed by our surname but our country identifies us by our EPIC number i.e. Elector’s Photo Identity Card number. This data before being carved out into a form has to be extracted, transformed and then finally, loaded in order to be processed, which might be erroneous at times.

According to him, miscellaneous errors in technical tools to extract them, errors in reading various Indic texts, variations in the file format/names, etc. keeps us away from harnessing this data perfectly. On that note he also quotes,

“In India, The data set is digitally born but physically used in electoral purposes”

While analyzing data, metadata should be honored and represented properly, according to the conventions and standards. It should be indexed and easily accessible. (For example, only KA should be used for Karnataka but not KN)

“Simplification is another area where we, as data analysts/visualizers, should concentrate on the normal users. Transliteration is another important factor. High level of quality analysis should also be considered while data mining and data modelling.”

“It’s in the smell” he said, while putting the lecture to an end. When you seek a data set, when you listen to an inference, when you stumble upon something fishy, you smell the ingredients and analyze its quality with precise quantity and then serve your hungry mind.

What you get is an Alicia Souza original. For the 63rd episode of the weekly Gyaan Adda, NIDB invited Alicia Souza for a li’l talk about her journey as one of the most popular illustrators who have emerged out of Bangalore. To brush up on her, she is a ‘happiness illustrator’, who illustrates good little nothings about almost everything which pops up from about anywhere. Just like her illustrations, Alicia lit up our conference space with her giggly talk and her positive aura. Not to mention her obsession with her fluffy dogs which have proved to be an inspiration in many of her illustrations. 10486344_740820379303877_9008484436927661574_o Once a blushing shy girl, Alicia talks about how she overthrew her hitch to showcase her talent in front of billion eyes and now stands out to become one of her own intellectual property.
